The 37th treasurer of the United States was Anna Escobedo Cabral. She served in this position from January 19, 2005 to January 20, 2009 under President George W. Bush. Cabral was the first Hispanic woman to hold this position. Prior to her appointment, she served as the director of the Smithsonian Institution's Center for Latino Initiatives. During her time as treasurer, Cabral oversaw the production of new designs for quarter and dollar coins, including the first Presidential dollar coins. She also worked to increase financial education and literacy, particularly among underserved communities, and improve the Treasury Department's management practices. After leaving her position as treasurer, Cabral went on to serve as the president and CEO of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
